Yarn Along

It's almost farm day weekend for us. Better known as National Alpaca Farm Days around the country. We open our gates to the public for a fun and busy weekend. In addition to farm tours, we have our farm store aka "The Coop" open for people to buy alpaca made products. Some is handknit or crocheted by my sisters, myself and my mom. Other things are brought in and everything is beautiful and made from alpaca. We also carry alpaca yarn for our knitter friends!

I have been busy knitting away, so I thought I would show my latest projects.
Using up ends I made a kid hat.

I spent an hour at the soccer fields and did a bunch of end weaving and finishing.

I started another Outlander Cowl for the Coop. Hoping to get this baby done by Saturday!
I am reading Orphan Train for bookclub.

Chase snapped a picture of me with my phone. It's the only one I have of myself wearing my new sweater, so I thought I would post it on here. I've already gotten a ton of use out of it! So happy this one is long sleeved. I can wear it so much more than my green on in this pattern.

A few cowls for sale...

Bag labeling!

If I still had a VHS player I would totally take this out of the library!!!!
A favorite of mine and my sisters.

And a little certain someone got to go in the bunny pen at school today :)
Chase was sooooooo happy. The bonus of being a teacher's helper at your kid's preschool is you get to see these moments and take lots of pictures.

Ok...back to work!
Hope you can join us this weekend for Farm Day!

In the meantime, here are some photos from past farm days.

I played yarn chicken and I won.

Have you heard the phrase "Playing Yarn Chicken"?
It's that lovely moment that happens in knitting when your pretty ball of yarn is getting oh so small and your project still seems like there is lots to knit. And do you have more yarn ready for the rest of the project? Nope. You don't. Because you didn't buy enough. And can you just hop online or go to your local yarn shop and buy more? Well, yes. Yes you can...usually. OR you can play yarn chicken and make a few adjustments and then WIN the game.

My newest sweater is complete and off the needles. And I love it.
I called this sweater my Bus Stop Cardigan because most of the knitting was done at the kids bus stop. It's also the exact same color as the interior of my car so it seemed to fit the name.
It's a DROPS pattern. UGH Drops. I have a love hate relationship with DROPS. The patterns are free, so that's nice. However, they are written all wonky for US knitters and are all over the place. So I tend to pull out the info I need and retype my own version on the pattern.

The buttons are turquoise colored and ceramic. From the etsy shop, ImpressionsStoneware

I also finished up a little baby girl sweater in alpaca yarn. This was a custom order.
It's knitted with Cascade Pure Alpaca yarn that we carry in the farm store. It's a pretty teal color.
I still have to weave in the ends and sew on buttons.

I went button browsing in my little red sewing box. I bought this while I was in college at Kutztown University at a local farmer's sale. Renningers I think was the name of it. That place was awesome and now that I'm thinking of it, I think I need to make a trip out there. I forgot how great that was!
Need to research that asap and see if it still exists.

And my last knit this week is a pretty white seed stitch cowl. Knitted with my mom's handspun yarn from Lily the alpaca's fleece. This will be a gift.

A Moment in Time

13 years ago today we all remember where we were. It's a day marked with sadness for our country.
We all have our own story of that day. Personally, I was 6 months pregnant with my first baby, living in Pennsylvania and working for Rodale Publishing as a book designer.
I was at my desk checking email, drinking coffee while a Joanna, a co-worker of mine sat on my office mate's desk waiting for her arrival (which was always late!! Nothing's changed)
Tara walked in to our office and told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Towers.
She had heard it on the car radio. Of course, we all thought it was a horrible accident.
Minutes later I entered my boss's office for a meeting. An hour later, I came out of the bubble of my boss's office to find out the tragic news of what was really going on.

My husband called me at work and told me get home so we could be together.
I was terrified to leave my building. I was terrified to go anywhere.
But we all knew we should go home. Work closed early and I drove home.
Unable to comprehend what was going on, I just held onto my ever-growing baby belly and prayed.

13 years later, and it's like it happened yesterday.
My children were not born when this happened. They did not know about these horrible events until a few years ago. I tried to shelter them from it because it was and is so scary.

This morning, my 12 (almost 13 year old) son that had been in my belly in 2001 looked so old to me!
He sat with me in the car at the bus stop and for the first time, he asked me about my memory of 9/11.
Not what happened on 9/11, but how I felt on 9/11. He asked me if I was scared. Scared isn't even the beginning of the feeling we all had that day. Now living in NJ where I grew up, we are so close to NYC. At night on every Septemeber 11th, we can see the twin lights reaching toward the sky. I have friends that worked in the city and witnessed the events first hand. Many people in this area lost family and friends in the tower attacks.

THis morning, after my big kids went to school, I drove to the local grocery store. While I was standing looking at the cereals, a man my age was climbing a ladder and stocking the shelves. The manager came on the loud speaker and asked for a moment of silence in memory of the lives lost on this day, 13 years ago. Not a dry eye in the store. And the guy stocking the shelves looked at me, with tears running down his face and said, it's like it was yesterday. I agreed. You could hear the communal sigh, deep breaths, wiping of tears and getting back to what you were doing.

In memory of anyone that lost their life, family member, friend, we wish you peace today.

And this day also makes us all remember how lucky we are to have life and family and friends and  babies and kids and pets. And alpacas :)

Happy 2nd birthday to Aponi, the alpaca.
Aponi is the daughter of Melody and was born on September 11th, 2 years ago!
She is named Aponi because as soon as she was born a butterfly landed on her.
The American Indian word for butterfly and new life is, Aponi. So that's her story :)
And Chase always yells at me when I point out Aponi. He insists that she's not A PONY...she's a paca!!!!! Always makes me laugh.

And 2 years ago on this day, baby boy Wade decided it was almost time to come out of his mom's belly! Wade will be 2 on Saturday :) Love that boy so much. Can't wait to celebrate!

Yarn Along

Happy Yarn Along Day

I finished reading I Am Pilgrim and it was incredible. Terrifying and satisfying all at the same time.
I had many moments that I had to walk away and let my heart calm down. The book was our book club pick for the month and a few girls had read ahead of me. Convincing me to continue and finish, I pressed on and devoured the end of the book. To say I'm glad I finished is an understatement! The book is not for everyone. But if you are looking for an intense spy, fast paced, murder mystery genre book, I would recommend it. But be warned....it will scare the you know what out of you!!!

Ok onto knitting.......
I read more than knitted this week so I don't have much to show.
I picked up this half done, gray cardigan that has been sitting lifeless on my shelve for a year now.
I am determined to get it finished with plans to wear it to Rhinebeck. It's a second go-around for this sweater and myself. I knitted this pattern up a few years ago. It was my first ever sweater and I really love it. But it had 3/4 sleeves and buttons that stopped half way down. I really wanted a sweater with long sleeves and button band all the way down the front. So I am adjusting it for myself.

(here is the original green sweater...and I'm not pregnant. This photo was taken when I was pregnant with Chase. Awwww....I miss that. Not enough to have another one. But I really do enjoy being pregnant)

And this isn't really a new knit, but a recently finished and finally photographed knit I thought I would share. It's the Follow Your Arrow Mystery KAL. I put this down for a long time too. I need to stop doing that. I forgot where I was and didn't finish all the clues. I left off clue 5. I am very happy with it despite the one less clue. I wore it this morning and Garrett took a quick photo with my phone.

Yarn is Madelintosh tosh merino Light

Ok... that's it for today! Happy Knitting and Reading!

Summer's Last Blast and School Begins

School started around here late last week. And mother nature gave us a last blast of heat!
My mom went away to visit her best friend in North Carolina, so my sisters and I took care of the herd during the day and part of that job is keeping them cool.
We have two girls that are due to deliver soon so we kept a close eye on them. No babies yet.

We had a great time hosing the herd down throughout the past few days.

Here are some photos to share the fun!

That's Lily. Her baby is due very soon and not surprisingly, she was first to the hose!

Lily gives Chase a kiss on the head. I think she was happy for the hose.
 Chase helping Aunt Lizzie

Wade liked the puddles under the new curly willow trees.

We also have shade tents set up for the herd. The little boys liked it too.

My littlest kiddo started preschool. He had his first day today. Lots of crying and tears (and I cried too) which was interesting because I am a teacher's assistant so I had to hide my face while he screamed and cried which caused me to cry. But after only a few horrible minutes of crying, he loved it. I was able to sneak a few peeks at him throughout the morning and he seemed to do great. Phew. That was a close one! The first few pictures are from orientation day.

And my big kids headed off to school too....
7th grade and 5th grade. They didn't cry. Although I think if my 5th grader could have cried, he would. He didn't want summer to end.

And a few random pictures off my phone....
Morning knitting

Pediatrician office knitting (another pair of socks...I know! I said I would NEVER knit socks again.)

Escaping the humidity and heat on Saturday at the library.

I babysat for my sister, Andee over the weekend. This is her sweet dog, Rudee. She's such a love!!!!

And a picture from a knitting book. Alpaca? I THINK NOT! It's a Llama. But whatever...I won't hold it against the author. It's a nice book otherwise. It's the Knitters Book of Socks. (yes..socks)

First day of school...Chase sharing his artwork with Wade. They were so happy to see each other!

It's been a long few days and I know it's just going to get busier and busier. When did life get so busy? Off to make dinner and help with homework. Good thing Mom is landed in NJ and Dad is back from NY. The alpacas will be so happy to see their Bean Queen.
